In this 100th anniversary month of the birth of legendary thinker and writer James Baldwin, the Racial Justice Task Force has chosen a 1965 Cambridge debate between him and Williams Buckley as our monthly film. We will gather in the Schweitzer Room on Friday, August 30 at 6:15. This is a pot luck dinner, which we will eat while we watch the debate, starting at 6:30. Then we can talk together about what we’ve seen and heard.
The question put in the debate is, “Has the American dream been achieved at the expense of the American Negro?” ”The debate came at a time of significant social change, with the Voting Rights Act being passed just months later in the US. The broadcast was live on the BBC then, but it was later rebroadcast on stations across America. In the years since, several books and dramatic reproductions, along with countless articles, both academic and media, have been produced about the debate and its impact.” -Wikipedia
Everyone is welcome to join us as we work to dismantle racism and other oppressions in ourselves and our institutions, as the 8th Principle states. Please remember to bring food to share. Invite a friend! (Future films are scheduled for Friday, September 27, October 25, and November 29.)
