Speaker: Robert Cavalier

Description: Just as changes in the earth’s climate affect changes in our weather, changes in our politics can affect the outcomes of elections and policy decisions. Today, the disturbing growth of manipulated and fabricated misinformation in politics is impacting our political climate. Come to hear how the principles and practices of deliberative democracy can address this crisis in the city of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County.

Speaker: Robert Cavalier is editor of The Impact of the Internet on Our Moral Lives (SUNY, 2005) and author of Democracy for Beginners (For Beginners LLC, 2009). He is a member of Carnegie Mellon’s Center for Ethics and Policy and Director of the Program for Deliberative Democracy which won a 2008 Good Government Award from the Pittsburgh League of Women Voters. He is currently Teaching Professor, Emeritus, Department of Philosophy, Carnegie Mellon University. In July 2024 his op ed “The mixture of church and state is a mistake of biblical proportions” appeared in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
