This Sunday, September 29, we will be celebrating the 137th anniversary of the founding of Unitarianism in the Khasi Hills region of India. Hajom Kissor Singh was a member of the Khasi Seng tribe who had been converted by Methodist missionaries. He began questioning the Methodist faith and chose Unitarianism as a better fit. He held the first Unitarian service in that region of India on September 18, 1887 in his home with 3 others in attendance. What an inspiration, as today Khasi Hills has the fourth largest Unitarian community in the world, and is the home of the school which our church supports. In Khasi Hills, our modern unitarian friends celebrate all month with special activities to “rededicate ourselves to our faith”. The highlight is a torch procession in each village to spread and share the light of faith with others in the community. They also visit each other’s homes bringing blessings. This Sunday during worship at First Unitarian, we will be sharing a blessing from our Khasi Hills friends to celebrate with them. Also, please look for the Khasi Hills table during coffee hour after the service.
