One of the most powerful lessons I gained from traveling for a month in Kenya over the summer was the rootedness of identities tied to land. It gave me insights not only into how the history of Kenya as a country has developed, but also ways that the Black experience in the U. S. differs. At a time when we are globally becoming more open to embracing a sense of identity that includes our living Mother Earth, the time seems ripe to be thoughtful at how we view current events in countries other than our own.
